FAAC Welding & Fabrication: The Irvine Owner’s Guide

FAAC welding and fabrication work in Irvine typically runs $285-$690 installed, depending on whether we’re repairing a cracked gate hinge bracket, rebuilding a bent slide-track section, or fabricating a custom steel post mount. Most jobs are completed same-visit, since we carry steel stock, a portable MIG welder, and FAAC-specific mounting hardware on every truck. You usually find out this work is needed the hard way: the gate starts dragging, a hinge tears loose from the post, or the operator strains audibly because the geometry underneath it has shifted.

We’re an independent gate repair company in Irvine, not affiliated with FAAC. What that means for you: we work on the FAAC operator already on your property, and we fabricate what the installation actually needs, not what a replacement catalog happens to sell.

Which FAAC Models This Applies To

This applies to almost every FAAC swing and slide operator installed in Irvine residential properties, but the common ones we weld around are the FAAC 400, 402, 412, and 415 swing operators, the 740, 741, and 844 slide operators, and the S418 and S450 hydraulic lines that show up on heavier custom gates. The welding need usually isn’t in the operator itself. It’s in the leaf, the post, the bracket, or the track that the operator drives.

Before we fabricate anything, we identify the mounting pattern. FAAC changed their bracket bolt spacing between the 400-series generations, and a bracket fabricated for a 402 will not line up cleanly on a 415 without an adapter plate. We measure the center-to-center distance on the existing baseplate, match it against the operator’s serial plate, and cut the new steel to that layout. If the operator is mislabeled or painted over, we pull the motor housing and match the internal frame, which is the reliable identifier on older units.

On OEM versus aftermarket: FAAC’s factory brackets and hinge kits are well-made but priced for the brand. For static parts like post plates, hinge blades, and track gussets, a quality aftermarket equivalent fabricated from 1/4-inch or 3/8-inch steel performs identically for less money. For anything load-bearing inside the operator itself, we use the FAAC part. We’ll show you the price difference and let you choose, in writing, before we weld anything.

Signs Your FAAC Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

Signs Your FAAC Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
  • The gate sags two inches or more at the free end. This almost always traces to a hinge weld that’s cracked through or a hinge blade that’s bent. The FAAC operator keeps pushing the leaf through the same arc, so the sag gets worse every week, not better.
  • The operator grinds or labors mid-travel. When a slide gate’s track has a bent or cracked gusset, the roller trucks bind. The FAAC motor feels that resistance and pulls more current. We’ve measured operators in Irvine drawing 30% over spec because of a track issue the owner couldn’t see from the driveway.
  • A hinge or post plate has visible cracks or rust-through. Salt air from the coast near Newport and the humidity cycles through spring make powder-coated steel fail faster here than inland. Once moisture gets under the coating, the crack spreads along the weld line within a season or two.
  • The gate drifts past its limit or bounces at the stop. A post that’s degraded or a bracket that’s worked loose changes the effective travel length. The FAAC limits were set for the original geometry. When the geometry changes, the operator overshoots or rebounds.
  • You hear a metallic pop or feel a sudden drop when the gate opens. That’s a hinge failing, not the motor. The FAAC piston or gearbox will often survive. The steel it was mounted to gives out first.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Irvine, you should expect these installed price ranges for FAAC-related welding and fabrication:

  • Hinge bracket repair or reinforcement: $285-$420, including steel, welding, paint, and operator re-alignment
  • Custom post plate or baseplate fabrication: $320-$510, depending on plate size and hole layout
  • Slide track gusset or roller-mount repair: $350-$540, including straightening the affected section
  • Full hinge replacement with fabricated steel, two hinges: $470-$690, including removal of the leaf if needed

What drives the range is mostly access and steel section size. A hinge bracket on a 12-foot single-leaf gate near Woodbridge Village Center with clear access runs toward the low end. A slide track repair with a leaf that must be unloaded, or a post plate buried in ivy and irrigation line, runs higher because of the labor to get to the point of the weld. Every quote includes parts, labor, paint or coating, and a photographed record of the finished weld. The price is written down and handed to you before any grinding or welding starts. No surprises at the end.

All welding and fabrication work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if a weld fails or the gate drifts out of spec within a year, we come back and make it right, no argument and no second invoice.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe version of DIY here, and an unsafe one. The safe version: check the visible welds and hinges with a flashlight, look for cracked paint or rust lines, and note whether the gate leaf sits level. You can send us photos before you decide anything. What you should not attempt is welding on a gate while it’s still controlled by a live FAAC operator. These operators store tension, especially on the 412 and 415 with their spring-loaded release systems. If the release is tripped mid-weld or the gate pinches a hand while you’re repositioning the leaf, that’s a hospital trip, not a repair. We unload the leaf, pin it, and de-energize the operator before we strike an arc. If you’re in Irvine and the weld has failed, call us at (657) 258-2588 rather than borrowing a welder.
