BFT Access Control Installation: The Irvine Owner’s Guide

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT access control splits into two families. The older, very common RIGEL series uses a hard-wired keypad with a ribbon connector that runs to the control board inside the motor housing. The PHEBE and newer PERSEO series use a modular bus system, which means the keypad, the card reader, and any expansion modules all talk over a single twisted pair. If you’ve got a working BFT opener and a dead keypad, the question isn’t usually the keypad itself. It’s whether the command is reaching the board at all.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha that burns Irvine owners: a RIGEL keypad will not talk to a PERSEO board, even though both say BFT on the faceplate. We see this after well-meaning handymen order whatever BFT part shows up first on a parts site and wire it in anyway. The result is a dead keypad, a tripped fuse, and sometimes a smoked input channel on the board. Before ordering anything, check the model label inside the operator housing. It’s a silver sticker with the series name printed above the serial number. Photograph it. That photo tells us, in seconds, which generation you have and whether you need the OEM part or whether a quality aftermarket equivalent will serve.

For BFT specifically, we lean OEM on the bus-communicating parts and are more comfortable with aftermarket on simple relay-output keypads, where the electrical spec matters more than the brand stamp. We stock both on the truck.

Signs Your BFT Access Control Installation Is Failing

• Keypad lights up but the gate doesn’t respond. The membrane is getting power, which means the failure is downstream: a dead relay on the access control board, a broken wire between the keypad harness and the motor, or a corrupted board that’s no longer sending the open command. This is the most common BFT access failure we replace in Irvine.
• The gate opens for a few seconds, then reverses. This isn’t a keypad failure. It’s the safety circuit misreading an obstruction, usually because the photo-eye voltage is dragging. But the symptom reads as access control failure to most owners, and the fix is reinstalling the correct termination on the access control board’s auxiliary inputs.
• Some codes work, others don’t. BFT keypads store codes in onboard memory. When individual codes drop out while others still work, the memory chip is failing. You can keep resetting them, but the board is going to lose them again. Budget for a module replacement.
• You have to press hard or multiple times. The keypad membrane is worn through from UV exposure and Irvine’s salt air. The conductive layer behind the buttons breaks down, and the board only registers a press when you mash the key flat. It’s a mechanical wear item, not a programming issue.
• Intermittent operation that comes and goes with the weather. Moisture intrusion into the keypad housing is classic coastal Irvine behavior. Spring humidity pushes condensation into the housing, the board shorts, and the gate works fine again once it dries out. Every cycle of this corrodes the board a little more until it fails outright.

DIY or Call Us?

You can, without any danger, do the diagnostic legwork yourself: locate the silver model sticker inside the operator housing, photograph it, and check whether the keypad is getting power. If the backlight is on and the gate still won’t respond, you’ve confirmed the keypad has voltage. What happens after that is where DIY goes sideways.

BFT access control modules connect into a low-voltage circuit, but that circuit shares a housing with the operator’s high-voltage terminals. One wrong probe contact against the line terminals, and you’re dealing with 120 volts. On top of that, we’ve been called to Irvine homes where an ambitious DIY effort cooked a $400 PERSEO board by wiring the bus incorrectly.
