DoorKing Welding & Fabrication: The Irvine Owner’s Guide

DoorKing welding and fabrication work on a residential or light-commercial gate in Irvine typically runs $240-$680 installed, depending on whether we’re repairing a cracked weld on an existing hinge bracket or fabricating a new mounting plate from scratch. We stock DoorKing-compatible weld plates, hinge assemblies, and arm brackets on the truck, and we can usually complete same-day fabrication for most standard swing-gate configurations. Most owners discover the problem the same way: the gate starts sagging by half an inch, then an inch, and eventually the operator struggles to move it because a weld has fatigued and the geometry is off. By the time the motor works harder than it should, the bracket or hinge post has usually been failing for months.

Here’s the way we approach DoorKing weld work, and it’s the same habit Adrian Vance brought out of commercial access-control: name what you found, name what it costs, name what you left behind. You get a photo of the failed weld before we cut anything, a written price before we strike an arc, and a photo log of the new weld and alignment when we’re done.

Which DoorKing Models This Applies To

Our welding and fabrication work covers the DoorKing swing-gate and slide-gate lines that show up most often in Irvine: the 6002/6003 swing series, the 6100 series slide-gate operator, and the older 9000/9100 slide units that are still running in neighborhoods around Turtle Rock and Northwood. The common thread is the hardware around the operator, not the operator itself: hinge weldments on the gate leaf, the operator mounting plate or post-bracket, the crank arm or connecting arm that ties the motor to the gate, and the limit-switch actuator bracket that sees constant movement.

Identifying the right part matters on DoorKing because the bolt pattern changed between generations. A 6002 swing arm bracket from the early 2000s will not line up with the mounting holes on a 6003 produced after roughly 2012 without drilling and re-fabbing. We match by model number on the operator’s data plate, but we also measure the hole centers before we cut or weld anything. That measurement gets written on the work order and photographed. For slide gates, the common fabrication job is a new steel deck plate under the operator when the original has rusted through from years of irrigation overspray, which we see regularly in Irvine’s older landscaped medians and side yards.

On OEM versus aftermarket: genuine DoorKing weld plates and brackets are decent, but for heavy Irvine gates that see daily cycling, we sometimes fabricate a thicker-grade replacement in-house. A factory 1/8-inch plate can be replaced with 3/16-inch steel for a few dollars more, and on a gate that cycles twenty times a day, that’s the difference between a five-year weld and a fifteen-year weld. We’ll quote both options and you pick.

Signs Your DoorKing Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

Signs Your DoorKing Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
  • The gate leaf sags visibly at the hinge side. This means a hinge weld or the hinge post itself has started to separate. The sag gets worse over weeks, and a sagging leaf changes the closing geometry enough to trip the limit switch early or late.
  • The operator strains or hums before the gate moves. When a mounting plate or arm bracket flexes from a cracked weld, the motor has to overcome that slop before it can move the gate. You’ll hear a low groan that wasn’t there a year ago.
  • You hear a creak or pop at the same point in every cycle. That’s a weld grinding against itself under load. A healthy joint doesn’t make noise. A joint that’s cracked through one side does.
  • The gate bounces or jerks halfway through the travel. A broken weld on the connecting arm lets the arm deflect on the push stroke, and the gate visibly lurches when the slack gets taken up.
  • The operator’s mounting base has visible rust bloom or flaking steel. On slide gates especially, water pools at the base plate and the weld seam, and once rust has crept between the plate and the concrete pad, the operator is no longer anchored the way DoorKing intended.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Job Typical Irvine Price Range
Weld repair on existing hinge or bracket (labor + consumables) $240 - $360
Fabricate and install new steel mounting plate (slide-gate operator) $320 - $520
Fabricate and install new swing arm bracket or connecting arm $280 - $480
Full hinge replacement with new weldments and alignment $420 - $680

Every price above is the installed figure, agreed in writing before we start. The range exists because material thickness, access to the work area, and whether we’re cutting out old steel or starting from a clean surface all move the number. You’ll get the exact flat price on paper, signed, before a tool comes off the truck. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the weld and the alignment for a full year: if the joint fails or the gate drifts out of true, we come back and make it right at no charge.

Labor and parts are itemized separately on the invoice, and you keep the photo record of the old weld, the new weld, and the final alignment. That’s Haven Standard Clause 4, and it’s not optional.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest split. You can safely check a few things before you call: look at the hinge welds for visible cracks or rust lines, watch the gate through a full cycle and listen for the creak, and check whether the operator is still square to the gate. What you should not do is attempt a structural weld repair with a big-box flux-core welder and a prayer. Gate hinges and operator brackets are under constant load, and a poor weld on a 400-pound gate fails catastrophically, not gradually. It’s also a liability question: a gate that breaks loose at the hinge can injure someone. The same goes for any work involving the operator’s electrical connections while the motor is wired to the panel. That’s a job for a trained technician with the breaker off and a meter in hand.

If you’ve already got a written estimate from another shop for this repair, bring it. We’ll review it free of charge and tell you whether the scope matches what we see on the gate. Call us at (657) 258-2588 and we’ll have a background-checked tech out to look at it, usually the same day you call.
