Linear Welding & Fabrication: The Irvine Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Linear-compatible welded gate components throughout Irvine, with most bracket, hinge, and frame repairs running between $240 and $680 installed, depending on the part, the damage, and whether the gate needs to be unweighted to get a clean weld. We carry the most common Linear swing-gate brackets, hinge plates, and operator mounting tabs on the truck, so a single-visit repair is the norm, not the exception. The way most Irvine owners find us is the same every time: the gate starts dragging on one corner, the opener strains at the same point in the arc, and there’s a hairline crack in a bracket that was installed years before the coastal humidity started working on it.

What we tell every customer before the first weld: we are an independent service provider, not a Linear factory shop. What that means in practice is we match the part to the gate, not to a brand loyalty. If the Linear bracket is the right answer, that’s what goes on. If a heavier aftermarket plate will outlast the OEM part on an Irvine gate that faces morning marine layer, we’ll show you both and write the price for each before any work starts.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

The welding and fabrication work we do spans the Linear swing-gate series you’re most likely to have: the LRA linear actuator models, the SL slide-gate operators, and the older APeX and MegaCode swing arms that are still running on hundreds of Irvine properties. The failure we see most often is not the motor itself. It’s the bracket. The actuator mount plate, the gate hinge plate, or the operator post tab develops a fatigue crack over years of daily cycles, and then the whole assembly works against itself.

Here’s what to look for when you’re identifying your part. The Linear operator arm will have a model plate on the housing, usually near the cable entry, with a number like LRA24 or SL2000. But the bracket that failed may be original Linear hardware or it may be something a previous installer fabricated. That’s the compatibility gotcha: not all Linear arms use the same mounting hole spacing, and a bracket off an APeX will not line up on an LRA without re-drilling, which weakens the plate and voids what you’re trying to fix. We measure the hole centers before we quote. We also check the swing path and the gate weight, because a bracket that failed once will fail again if the gate is heaver than the hardware was rated for.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question for Linear specifically: Linear’s original brackets are stamped or cast and they’re fine for a properly weighted, properly adjusted gate. When the gate is heavy, or the post has shifted, or the hinge has worn enough to change the load path, we’ll recommend a thicker fabricated plate, cut and drilled in our shop, with gussets where the OEM part had none. It costs a little more in steel and time. It costs a lot less than replacing the same bracket every two years.

Signs Your Linear Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

Signs Your Linear Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
  • The gate sags on the latch side. This usually means a hinge weld or hinge plate has fatigued. The gate is still functioning, but every cycle is levering the crack wider, and the opener is now carrying weight it was never rated for.
  • The operator arm makes a popping or snapping sound at the gate connection. The bracket bolts are wallowing in elongated holes, or the bracket itself is cracked behind the bolt head. The arm is pushing against movement, not against the gate.
  • The gate reverses midway through the cycle. The operator’s obstruction sensor is reading the increased resistance from a failing mount as an obstacle. The motor is fine. The welded connection is not.
  • You can see rust staining running from a bracket or plate. In Irvine, the marine layer pushes moisture into micro-fractures in mild steel. The rust stain is the visual record of a crack that opened up and then closed again on every cycle.
  • The gate scrapes the driveway on one side of the swing. A failing hinge plate changes the gate’s geometry. The scrape is the symptom. The hinge plate is the cause, and the opener is next in line to take the damage.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Irvine, most Linear bracket and hinge plate repairs fall between $240 and $680 installed. A simple actuator mounting bracket replacement, where the gate stays in place and the weld is accessible, runs on the lower end. A gate that has to be lifted off its hinges, have the old plates cut away, get new fabricated plates welded to the post and the gate, and then be rehung and re-balanced runs toward the upper end, and occasionally above it if the post itself needs steel work.

What’s included on every welding job: the written price before we strike an arc, the part or fabricated plate itself, the weld and finishing work, re-hanging or re-mounting if we removed the gate, and a full-cycle test with the operator. You get a photo log of what was found, what was cut away, what was welded in, and what the finished joint looks like. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the work. If a weld fails or the bracket breaks inside a year, we make it right at no additional charge. No argument, no fee.

Parts and labor are itemized separately on the written quote, so you can see exactly what the steel costs and exactly what the time costs. No blended numbers. No surprises.

You can safely check a few things yourself. Look at the brackets with a flashlight. If you see rust staining, a hairline crack, or bolts that have shifted in their holes, you’ve found the problem. You can also watch the gate move through one full cycle and note where it binds or scrapes. That’s useful information for us.

What you should not do is weld on a gate that’s still connected to a live operator. The capacitors in the operator hold charge even when the power is off, and a gate under tension can shift when you cut a bracket away. A gate that swings free with a broken weld holds enough weight to do real damage if it comes off its hinges. We’ve taken over jobs where a homeowner tried to weld a cracked bracket in place, burned through the capacitor circuit in the opener, and turned a $300 bracket repair into a full operator swap. If the part is cracked, the fix is a controlled job: unweight the gate, cut out the bad steel, weld in the new plate, re-hang, re-set the limits, and test. If you’d rather not do that yourself, call (657) 258-2588. We’ll name the price before we pick up a tool.
